Our Indigenous Peoples

Users: All age groups

Problem Statement: How might we create a platform for children and adults to understand more about the indigenous peoples of the world: their history, lifestyle, languages, sports, overall how they are an indispensable part of this planet and are a key to the 2030 agenda for sustainable development.

SCENARIO

The UN declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples was adopted in 2007 and since then many countries have taken steps to recognize the identity and rights of indigenous peoples. However, still there are considerable gaps between the formal recognition of indigenous rights.

As per UNDP, indigenous peoples are inheritors and practitioners of unique cultures and ways of relating to others, and to the environment. UNESCO has declared 2019 the International Year of Indigenous Languages and the first World Games of Indigenous Peoples were held in Brazil in 2015. In-spite of these steps taken education and healthcare issues, discrimination and violence are still affecting the well-being of our indigenous peoples.

It is about time we get to understand about our indigenous peoples, for in these times of climate change where sustainability is the key to our survival, they are leading on protecting the environment.

HOW IT WORKS

OUR INDIGENOUS PEOPLES will act as a window to the world of the indigenous peoples where users can know about the following:

  • History
  • Categories
  • Rights
  • Education and Healthcare issues faced by the Indigenous Peoples
